The Aegean architecture of Mykonos

With the white of the light and the blue of the sea, Mykonos' architecture travels you to different times through its winding, mazy alleyways.

The bright sun, the strong winds and ruthless pirates have shaped the Aegean islands with a unique, distinctive architecture: Whitewashed, flat roofed, cube-shaped houses built tightly next to each other and split by narrow alleyways.

The houses of Mykonos however, do slightly stand out thanks to their asymmetrical and rounded corners. Within the architecture of these buildings different seasons are met, seasons that unite the classical and the island component. Most of the houses are two story and are connected via an external staircase. There are also listed buildings counting over two centuries old that now serve as museums or exhibition spaces.

Strolling through the mazy alleyways that are flooded by bougainvillea plants, every visitor feels at home in this friendly environment which calls to him to discover the Chora, the capital that is, the island's historical settlement.

Every monument in Chora refers to another era. There is the Mycenaean tholos tomb and the remains of the prehistoric (protocycladic era) acropolis from ancient times, the towers and “Little Venice” from the time of Venetian rule and the well preserved chapels all ranging from the 17th to the 19th century.

Mykono's hallmark is undoubtedly the impressive windmills that tower over the sea and have the wind as their ally. They once grinded cereals provided by the residents and preserved the islands economy. Many lighthouses and wells can also be found on the island with the most characteristic being the Tria Pigadia, three identical wells, that until the mid 20th century provided the town with water.

With respect to the traditional architecture, modern houses are integrated into this architectural environment perfectly while maintaining their luxurious side. Well known Greek and non-Greek architects have designed and constructed villas and house blocks yielding unique and aesthetically pleasing buildings.
